Shinbism 2

"Burning Map",Murayama Banka Museum,  2019

Shinbism 2 was a collection of twenty artists selected by museum curators from all across the Nagano Prefecture to represent their aesthetic. The work was shown across 4 museums.  “Burned Map”  was collaborative, and children from different schools around the region were asked to draw or photograph experiences or objects that were important to them.  The filling in of the negative space by the creative dreams of the kids was the true focus of the work.

Life for me is often navigated by placing existential markers for places we have been, and goals for where we want to be.  Plotting stations on a map that has yet to be created, fully investing in the idea that our existence is linear.  This piece addresses the issue of what it means to collect memories, the need to create a planned future juxtaposed with our search for freedom from the known.  The piece delineates stops made from a place I know to an unfamiliar destination.  Along the way, samples of memories and experiences are collected in metaphoric containers, and gestures are left behind as fugitive footprints; the aesthetic expression culminating in the final map.
