Yoshimi Hayashi

Artist Statement

I often find that rather than absolutes, I am more and more fascinated by the decisions that force us to leave our idealistic polarities.  Humanity seems to exist somewhere in the difficulty of these departures, and it is there that I feel closest with the viewer of the work. I must force myself into these obsessive repetitive behaviors all the while attempting to mentally be in harmony with the action.  Although I would like to be hit with some Zen like awareness, the work reminds me of how punishing the actions are and how susceptible I am to my cognitive wanderings.  It is only after years of attempting to reach some higher mindful state, that I am left with what is the true awareness:  honest failure.   The works are the residue of the attempt, a by-product of truly not getting there.

I believed at one time that the greatest art was one that stood the test of time, but now, I feel that in my work, the best never existed in the first place and never will.  Therefore, more and more, I enjoy the fugitive aspects of my work; as if they themselves are suppose to wrinkle along with its creator and the viewer.  Perhaps the attempt to grasp is really the definition of mindfulness.

Bio

Yoshimi Hayashi is an artist that resides in California.  He is a professor of art at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, CA and teaches sculpture, Ceramics, and Land Arts classes. He currently serves as the chair of the department.  He holds a Masters in Fine Art from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Science in Psychology from the California State University, Stanislaus, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Before becoming an artist, he specialized in children with disabilities and his consultations took him around the world to help set up programs for behavioral treatment of autism.  He also worked with Cambodian and Hmong communities treating PTSD and a creating a gang intervention program for youth in the California Juvenile Detention system.

He and his family immigrated from Tokyo, Japan to Los Angeles, California in the late 1970’s and having feet in both cultures, considers himself a 1.5 generation.  Hayashi incorporates his Japanese sensibilities for the love of the simple, vapid, and ephemeral, with the Western rigor for conceptual and psychological analysis.  His recent work has incorporated ideas of a “place” and takes into consideration of how artworks work in relationship to certain site.  This consideration often expands beyond the limits of a room in a gallery or a museum, and encompasses more global perspective of the locale.  The artwork not only becomes a microscopic study of the object, but serves as a starting point to a macroscopic investigation of the surrounding location (city, town, country).  The work is often created on site after extensive study of the location and its people.  The work incorporates mixed media ranging from video, woods, ceramics, fiber, paper, and metals, and Hayashi is particularly drawn to materials that are mundane and fragile as a metaphor for the human condition.

Aside from his art practice, he has curated a number of exhibitions that have traveled internationally and organized art related projects.  He has collaborated with organizations outside of the art world, recently with the Yale University Environment and Forestry Department, to create partnerships between the Arts and Sciences.  His work has been shown in international venues ranging from Costa Rica, Germany, Australia, United States, and Japan.  His work has been featured in books and magazines, and is in the collected by individuals and corporate portfolios.
